The Sarbanes-Oxley Act of 2002, named after sponsors Senator Paul Sarbanes and Representative Michael Oxley, established national standards for the boards and management of publicly traded companies in response to corporate accounting scandals.

PAETEC's compliance initiative was started as a result of the acquisition of US LEC in 2007 in which it became a publicly traded company, and was achieved through process modifications, validation testing and coordination between 28 internal departments. "This was a significant feat for PAETEC given the parallel integration initiatives of systems and processes over the past two years," said Arunas Chesonis, PAETEC's chairman and CEO. "As a result of the SOX project and associated process improvements, we're now a stronger company."

In 2005, the company also received national recognition from the Society of Financial Service Professionals after receiving the American Business Ethics Award in the mid-size company category (250-2,500 employees). PAETEC will be expanding its SOX compliance initiatives to encompass the 2008 acquisition of McLeod USA, with a planned completion by the end of 2009.
