PAETEC’s Web Site Gets a Make-over

Have you noticed something different on the www.paetec.com site? On October 30, we enhanced every page to make it easier to find the information you’re looking for.  The site, which has been under development for over a year, is optimized for ease of use while delivering the relevant information you seek quickly. You can even follow the latest PAETEC news on popular social networking sites such as Facebook, LinkedIn, and Twitter.

 

"Our business-focused solutions, capabilities, and geographic reach have increased dramatically over the past years," said John Chapman, PAETEC senior vice president of marketing.  "This new site is designed not only to highlight our vertical focus and deep portfolio for serving our business customers, but also to educate users on the newest trends in communications technology."

Wired or Wireless Loops – The Choice is Now Yours

It’s easier now than ever to connect with PAETEC’s network, with new redundancy and speed options. So far in the fourth quarter of 2009, PAETEC has activated the following nine fixed wireless points-of-presence (POP): Boston; Chicago; Seattle; Portland, OR; Washington, DC; Albany; Newark; and two in New York City. This type of fixed wireless expansion will continue into 2010.

 

Each of these POPs represents a location where PAETEC can connect a customer to its network over a fixed wireless local loop.  In some markets, the POP is located at the PAETEC switch.  In markets where the switch facility is not well-suited for wireless access, PAETEC has secured rights to a third party location and extended its core network to that facility. In virtually every case, PAETEC wireless customers are using a fixed wireless access facility (a “local loop”) as an important part of their physical infrastructure diversity plan - with the wireless local loop, they have services coming into their network on a facility that is totally independent of the LEC.

The Urgent Toll Fraud Alert That Could Save You Thousands

Across the industry, PBX and voicemail hacking incidents are on the rise, and victims may include our commercial and wholesale customers. The end-user's PBX/voicemail systems are being compromised and used as vehicles in fraudulent activity associated with International Revenue Sharing Fraud (IRSF).  PAETEC is working with industry-wide fraud and security experts to examine the impact of this trend and explore network and customer solutions.

How can you protect your business?
  1. Contact your equipment vendor immediately and have a proactive discussion on PBX and voicemail security;
  2. Deactivate unused features and mailboxes;
  3. Change default passwords for users and administrators and increase the length of passwords;
  4. Restrict outward dialing on voicemail systems;
  5. Block operator services or international access as appropriate;
  6. Block casual dialing from the PBX: 101XXXX and 1010XXX;
  7. Add verified account codes for international dialing;
  8. Review the call detail on monthly invoices and report anything suspicious;
  9. Invest in call accounting software or station message detail recording to review internal extensions for abnormal activity; and
  10. Do not allow remote access until confident the system is secure.

PAETEC continually modifies its monitoring and detection processes to keep up with the latest trends, but we need our customers’ help! Tightening the security on Customer Premises Equipment (CPE) is the single most effective way to prevent fraud.
