(Print-friendly PDF file)
FAIRPORT, NY - PAETEC Communications Inc., a nationwide communications solutions provider, has launched a new quality initiative centered on Six Sigma, a highly disciplined process used by industry-leading organizations to improve business performance.
PAETEC's training was provided by GE's "At the Customer, For the Customer" (ACFC) program, an innovative initiative whereby GE freely shares best practices and processes with its customers to help them grow. PAETEC is a customer of GE Commercial Finance Global Media & Communications. GE - recognized worldwide for popularizing the use of Six Sigma as a methodology to improve business performance - agreed to provide PAETEC with initial Six Sigma training and mentoring.
"Our business relationship with PAETEC extended to Six Sigma training and mentoring," said Damon Werner, Six Sigma Master Black Belt and vice president, ACFC at GE Commercial Finance. "We're introducing PAETEC to the tools that we use everyday to grow our business to help them grow their business."
PAETEC has sent 27 key executives through GE's Six Sigma training program in 2004. Employees attain specific levels of achievement based on proficiency and experience, similar to the martial arts belt system. The goal is for each employee to attain the Six Sigma "white belt" level within three years.
"We are raising our commitment to quality to a higher standard - and ultimately, our customers will benefit," said Tim Bancroft, executive vice president responsible for PAETEC's quality program.
Since the company's inception, PAETEC has adopted standards set by the International Standards Organization (ISO) to document, inspect, and improve all business processes. In 2003, PAETEC achieved a major quality milestone - ISO 9001:2000 certification for all business functions within the company. ISO ensures adherence to business process documentation standards. By adopting Six Sigma, PAETEC has taken business improvement to the next level.
"PAETEC customers will reap the benefits through consistent, superior service and reduced costs," added Jeff Burke, executive vice president at PAETEC. "Exceeding customer expectations in the network quality we provide, the competitive pricing we offer, and our prompt response for support, is the standard we strive towards every day."

Dec 15, 2004 - PAETEC Launches IP Product Set for Financial Markets
(Print-friendly PDF file)
NEW YORK, NY - PAETEC Communications, Inc., a national communications solutions provider, announced a new suite of products developed to bring the next generation of transport technology to the trading floors and brokerage houses of the financial marketplace.
Internet Protocol (IP) technology is set to dominate the method by which information moves in the financial industry, specifically in voice trading. IP voice trading is attractive for several reasons, including increased operational efficiencies, reduced operational costs, and an inherent disaster recovery capability. So while PAETEC can skillfully satisfy the needs of those firms requesting traditional switched-access voice lines, it is well positioned to focus on IP delivery for the following products:
- Automatic Ring Down
- Manual Ring Down
- Hoot & Holler
- Shared T1 Access
Additionally, PAETEC offers a full-suite of integrated local, long distance, and toll-free services, as well as enhanced data, and communications management services.
"Our goal is to become the premier provider of global high-performance networks that will enable financial firms and their service providers to communicate, access services, share information, and transact business 'on net,' said Brad Bono, co-Chief Operating Officer at PAETEC. "As we move deeper into serving the trading side of the financial community, we have the financial stability, cutting-edge MPLS network, 24/7 customer support, and network diversity to support these mission-critical applications."
As technology advances and changes based on customer needs, one of PAETEC's advantages, according to Bono, is that the company's state-of-the-art IP network contains no legacy equipment, which can be expensive to maintain.
In addition to new products, PAETEC offers customers a financial services team with a wealth of Wall Street telecom experience. John Faccibene, Vice President and General Manager of Financial Markets, and William Wagner, Jr., Vice President of Technology, Financial Markets, bring more than 50 years of combined telecommunications experience to PAETEC, much of that spent working with the financial community.

(Print-friendly PDF file)
Rochester, NY - PAETEC Communications Inc., a communications solutions provider serving 27 markets nationwide, today unveiled a suite of services that provide customers with a variety of solutions for all of their main video conferencing needs.
"PAETEC is uniquely positioned to handle all aspects of video conferencing, from applications to transport technology to service," says Jack Baron, PAETEC's chief marketing officer. "In the past, video conferencing users often had three or more companies to try to coordinate their conferencing services. Our customers have stressed that they want a single point of contact for all of these services."
Video conferencing is rapidly growing due to many factors, including a reduction in the cost of equipment, more efficient transport methods, a less expensive alternative to time-consuming travel, and higher quality images that use less bandwidth.

MPLS uses Quality of Service (QoS) to prioritize traffic, enabling time-sensitive video information to receive top priority as data travels across the network. Customers can also use traditional ISDN lines.
"The next generation of IP-based video conferencing represents a new paradigm in telecommunications," Baron said. "Our customers can truly integrate high-quality video calls with their data network, incurring no usage charges and often using their existing video equipment."

Aug 02, 2004 - PAETEC boosts IP Data Network to Allow QoS Capabilities
(Print-friendly PDF file)
Rochester, NY - Imagine needing a contract shipped overnight and it was treated the same as a box of staples not expected until next week. Would you be satisfied with how your packages were prioritized? PAETEC Communications Inc., a communications solutions provider serving 27 markets nationwide, announces the addition of Quality of Service (QoS) as a customer-enabled prioritization enhancement to its Multi-Protocol Label Switching (MPLS) private network.
On most traditional private data networks, information is placed in packets that are all treated equally - regardless of the urgency of the content. Using QoS, a customer can designate levels of priority for their traffic over PAETEC's MPLS network, so time-sensitive traffic passes through the network first. While prioritization means everything to the quality of a videoconference or a voice call over IP, the end user will not notice the potential millisecond delay in sending or receiving an e-mail message.
"MPLS was a giant leap into the convergence of voice and data networks. Now the enhancement of our Quality of Service completely revolutionizes how a network may be used," says Jack Baron, chief marketing officer. "Real-time applications such as voice or video over an IP network weren't thinkable before, but can now be easily implemented, providing our customers unprecedented productivity, efficiency, and cost savings."
Quality of Service is the latest benefit to PAETEC's industry-leading, SECURETEC MPLS-based IP network, adding to telecom's lowest latency (delay), highest packet delivery percentage, and most stringent Service Level Agreements.

Jun 24, 2004 - UNE Ruling Won't Slow PAETEC's Continued Growth
(Print-friendly PDF file)
Rochester, NY - PAETEC Communications Inc., a communications solutions provider serving 27 markets nationwide, continues to thrive by following an innovative business plan even as recent court rulings potentially restrict access by Competitive Local Exchange Carriers (CLECs) to the networks of Incumbent Local Exchange Carriers (ILECs).
Under the old rules, CLECs were allowed to lease the unbundled network elements (or UNEs) of the networks of large local phone companies for their own use at reduced wholesale prices. To competitors in the telecom industry that rely on UNEs, the recent court ruling means that they could shortly see either increases in wholesale rates, a restriction in availability of certain UNEs, or both. Although questions have been raised regarding the long-term viability of CLECs, PAETEC's success is not dependent on UNEs.
The primary reason that PAETEC is sheltered from the UNE issue is that PAETEC purchases "special access" service from the ILEC to make the connection between the customer premises and the nearest PAETEC point of presence (POP). Special access is a different form of network access that was not affected by the recent decision on UNEs. This separates PAETEC from most other CLECs.
"While we cannot speak to the issues and financial implications facing the competitive industry as a whole as a result of this issue, we are confident that PAETEC's profitable business plan, particularly our wholesale cost structure, is insulated from this period of regulatory uncertainty," said Brad Bono, co-chief operating officer for PAETEC. "We will continue to provide our customers with superior telecommunications service at the competitive prices they have come to expect."
Because special access is a service, not just a piece of the ILEC's network, PAETEC receives a greater degree of cooperation and attention from the ILEC throughout the ordering, provisioning and maintenance process than it would if it were purchasing UNEs.
This underscores PAETEC's commitment to its customers, according to Bono. "Given the critical importance of good customer service in PAETEC's business plan, getting the best quality service from our own network suppliers is imperative," he said.

"It enhances our business model with the addition of a strong set of new customers that will strengthen our market-leading position in the medium-to-large commercial segment throughout the Northeast corridor, and it brings us opportunities to offer a full suite of facilites-based services to those customers. Our integration team is developing a plan to move quickly to achieve a smooth transition and bring together the best from both companies in terms of people, processes, and technology."
Subject to final adjustment on closing, PAETEC will pay a cash amount based on a multiple of monthly operating revenue of approximately $2.7 million associated with the selected Covista customers, assets and facilities. Payment is due in three installments over an agreed-upon transition period, with the majority payable upon closing. In addition, PAETEC will assume leases for existing Covista switch facilities in New York and Philadelphia, as well as office locations in Bensalem, PA and Paramus, NJ. Covista will also execute a Wholesale Service Agreement to purchase $12 million of services from PAETEC over 24 months.
The closing of the acquisition is expected to boost PAETEC's revenues, which were over $100 million during the first quarter of 2004. Bono added that the acquisition will enhance positive operating cash flow and bolster the more than $19 million in EBITDA that PAETEC generated in the first quarter. The acquisition is also expected to contribute at least $.05 per fully diluted share in net income for the company during 2005.
